I suspect you've seen this already, and of course your book is already done, but here's another great story for the ongoing collection:

I look forward to reading your book in the Fall! I've been giving presentations for more than 15 years. In the last 6 years I was a Keynote speaker at nearly 500 events. What helped me become so much better than the "masses" and boring speakers, was my ability to add stories, humor and get the audience involved within my presentation. I'm also very passionate (sincerely, not baloney), have confidence in what I talk about and have fun. I realize that I am not saving lives when I'm on stage. This isn't brain surgery, but it is an art that takes skill, practice and energy.

Many years ago, I asked my sales manager how I could become a better speaker. He told me to become a "student of the sport." So I watched, listened and studied up on the Best speakers in the industry. You learn a lot from the best. Of course you learn more from the worst too. The reason many are boring may be because of their delivery, lack of interest, passion and energy. Their information is also dry. Their personality is often dull. The best speakers really enjoy the limelight, feeding off the energy of the audience, which also feeds off the speaker. What a win win!

Thank you Scott. Enjoy the day!

I love the book idea, and am excited to read it.

I spent 10 years of my life training teachers and public speakers. There was always one main thread that I found lacking in the common group of trainees: Acting skills.

You mentioned the importance of acting skills, and it bears exploration. The problem is that acting has a bad rap. There are so many bad intro-to-acting experiences and there is a general stigma with actors.

The biggest misconception many people have is that acting is about lying. What acting is really about is understanding how to communicate effectively in unnatural dynamics. I wrote a little about it here: http://arrowoodcurve.blogspot.com/2008/04/speaking-with-eyes.html

Thanks for your work.

Hi Scott! I plan to twitter a link to your "Kill lecture bordom through science" post but I noticed you have a typo in your title (should be boredom") and wanted to give you a chance to correct. (Otherwise *I'll* get the feedback, lol.)

Looking forward to the new book!
